  • Surface porosity
For surface porosity, the more porous a material, the more likely it is to absorb odors i.e. carpet, carpet pad, insulation
  • Heat
Heat from fire causes materials to expand which allow odors to penetrate. Materials that cool down after the fire end up trapping odors within the material

So, how do we reduce smoke odor?

  • Air scrubbers
Air scrubbers capture airborne microorganisms and eliminate surface microorganism and effectively aid in the filtration and cleaning of the airspace

Elk Grove Fire Cleanup

9/4/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage can cause absolute devastation, so we are there to help you when you need it most.

Fires. One of nature's most destructive processes. Fires are useful, they allow us to do things like cook food and drive cars when controlled. But if they are left for one second in an uncontrolled environment, fires cause immense devastation. So much devastation that there is a whole industry that revolves around the reparations from damage caused by fires.

What do you see in a fire damage

  • Dry smoke residue is caused by high heat, fast burning fires fueled by wood and paper. This is what you usually think of when you imagine ash and soot--powdery and dry. The fine powder is often simpler to clean since it is easy to wipe off. However, it can fall into cracks and porous surfaces, and while the soot may be hidden from view, the smell will remain.
  • Wet smoke residue is caused by low-heat, slow-burning fires from burning plastic or rubber. This black smoke leaves behind an often thick and sticky residue with a strong odor. Wet smoke residue smears easily, which often makes cleanup more difficult.
  • Protein residue is left behind after the evaporation of organic material, usually food. The residue is almost invisible. However, it discolors varnishes, paints, and finishes. It also gives off a strong, offensive odor.
  • Water damage can be caused by any relief efforts to put out the fires. The water can be introduced through firefighting or smoke detecting water sprinklers. It is so important to dry out the structure as well, because if it is left unattended mold will grow

It is so important to remediate as soon as possible in order to prevent secondary damage, whether that be mold damage or ash that set into the structure.

Let SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden Arcade help you out. We have trained technicians that are available 24/7 for your restoration needs. Give us a call at 916-285-7257 for a free estimate today.

You need to make sure that the fire is extinguished, that the authorities have established that it is safe to enter, and the severity of the fire. You need to recognize that there is a chance that you might not be able to reenter if the building is too badly damaged.

Know who to call.

  • Contact family members that may not have been with you. Let them know what happened, let them know that everybody is okay (if so) and let them know the information that is necessary.
  • Contacting your insurance is the number one thing that youneed to do. This will not only enable documentation of the event and set in train the insurance claim but your insurer will be able to talk you through emergency lodging and living expenses. Remember to retain all receipts to make a claim. The insurance company will also assist with clean up options.
  • If you are a tenant, contact the owner/landlord and/or their insurance company.
  • Anyone who you feel that could be helpful to you, not necessarily just an insurance company but even a restoration company. Restoration companies should work hand in hand with your insurance to take some of that weight off of your shoulders.

Secure the property.

If you have not already being told to do so, it is important to secure your property to prevent possible looting. Talk to emergency services on how best to go about this. Most insurance policies require this.

Consider cleanup requirements

Depending on the severity of the fire, interior cleaning may be what is required. Damage to the property often goes beyond what you can see. Types of damage can include ash, charring, soot, smoke, odor, contents damage, and even water damage from fire fighters putting out the fire.

If water was used to put out the fire, its best to call the professionals.

Water damage can lead to more damage or even mold if not dried properly. Insurance companies will often have approved restoration contractors that you can call for board up, structural drying, contents cleaning and structural cleaning and repair.

Seek counseling if needed and reassure your family.

Having your house damaged or destroyed by fire is extremely traumatic and can have lasting impacts on each family member, depending on his or her ability to cope. Common feelings are helplessness, disorientation, pining for belongings, deep sadness, a sense of deprivation, despair and a loss of routine and structure. Reassure each other and let the emotions happen. Keep a close eye on children and be truthful with them about what has happened and if you do not know what is going to happen next, at least reassure them that you have one another, that things can all be replaced and that the only way is up from here on.

A house fire can be one of the most terrifying experiences you can go through. If you have experienced a fire in your home and need assistance with the cleanup, please give us a call at 916-285-7257, we are available 24/7 and are committed to bringing you the utmost care as quickly and professionally as possible.

Immediate Fire Restoration

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

In this hallway of a Sacramento home, you can see the soot buildup from a fire on the sides of the walls. Everything in this home was cleaned.

When your home or business is affected by fire damage, the aftermath is overwhelming, but if the restoration is postponed, the destruction from smoke damage will worsen. Whenever a fire damage occurs, firefighting efforts may cause water damage on the site as well. The longer you wait to assess this damage, the more repairs you will need to fix – which may be reflected in your bill for damages when all is said and done. To avoid costly repairs and long-term issues, it is important to make fire damage restoration a priority in order to get your home back to normal as soon as possible.

Find a Quality Fire Damage Restoration Service

One of the most important steps to take when dealing with fire restoration is to find a quality fire restoration services that can help you assess the damage, give you an estimate on costs and start the clean up process. It is important to contact your home insurance company to make them aware of the fire and they may provide you with referrals for reliable restoration companies in your area. It is pivotal to enlist the help of a licensed and insured fire damage restoration company to prevent further damage to your home. Most restoration companies are trained extensively to handle this type of damage and many will perform some of the following steps to help you through the initial fire cleanup.

  • Smoke and fire damage restoration services will try to save as many of your home and personal belongings (such as appliances, furniture and clothing) as they can.
  • Document everything they remove from your home by taking pictures and/or keeping written records.
  • Return any salvageable furniture and appliances back to your home, after the fire restoration is complete.
  • Work quickly and carefully to get you back in your home as soon as possible, and stay in contact with you to make sure the repairs were done correctly and your home isn't experiencing any other problems.

Be sure to go through your home insurance company when hiring a fire damage restoration service, or do a thorough background check if you choose one on your own to make sure they are licensed and insured. Be wary of “fire chasing” contractors who target victims of house fires and pressure them into signing expensive repair contracts, perform extremely low-quality repair work and might not be licensed or insured.

Start Cleanup Now!

While it is so important to have a qualified restoration company to handle your smoke damage restoration, there are some things that you can do to minimize the initial damage before professionals arrive.  If it is possible to enter your house, make sure you’re wearing work gloves, long sleeves/pants, and proper respiratory protection, such as a N95+ mask because exposure to soot can cause respiratory problems and other medical issues.

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil our home.
  • Place dry towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and high traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odors.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
  • Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of HVAC system.

If your home has been affected by fire or smoke damage, SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade has licensed, background checked technicians with a wealth of knowledge ready to help you out. To get an estimate, give us a call at 916-285-7257.

Holiday Fire TIps

Be fire safe this holiday season!

Last year in 2018, SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade did an article on Holiday Kitchen Tips, which was very well loved and we highly recommend you to check it out. And while it was a comprehensive look on Holiday cooking, we decided to broaden our scope this year and offer some extra tips on candles and Christmas tree safety. Because while you might not know it, the top three days for home candle fires are Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Christmas Eve, according to the National Fire Protection Association. These hallmarks of the holiday season with twinkling lights and brilliant evergreens that we love so much can quickly turn this festive time of year into a devastating one.

Holiday Cooking

Cooking fires are without a doubt the leading cause of US home fires and injuries year-round, Christmas Day is a particularly risky day for cooking with a 72% increase in the number of home cooking fires compared to a typical day. We already covered a good few tips you can check out here, but we just wanted to reiterate a couple for this holiday season.

  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
  • If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.

Learn more about Cooking Safety in your home here.

Christmas Trees

While Christmas tree fires aren’t super common, they are far more deadly than the average house fire. Lets get a couple of our facts straight:

  • One of every three home Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems.
  • Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. On average, one out of every 32 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 143 reported home fires.
  • A heat source too close to the tree causes roughly one in every four (25%!) of the fires.

Christmas tree safety doesn’t need to be hard! It’s about being vigilant and careful while you celebrate the holidays. It is important to be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas Tree can grow large very quickly.

  1. Picking the tree: Choose a tree with fresh green needles that do not fall off when touched. This assures that the tree will last the longest and it is dry.
  2. Placing the tree: Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.
    1. Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
    2. Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
    3. Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
  3. Lighting the tree: Use lights that have a label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
    1. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
    2. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
    3. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  4. After Christmas: Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry.
    1. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home, garage, or placed outside against the home.
    2. City of Sacramento residential yard waste customers can place trees in the street for pickup as part of the City’s Leaf Season service. Residents can find their estimated collection dates on the Sacramento Collection calendar.
    3. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

Candles

December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. More than half (55 percent) of the December home decoration fires were started by candles, compared to one-third (32 percent) the remainder of the year.

Candle with Care

  • Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
  • Keep candles at least 1 foot (30 centimetres) away from anything that can burn.

If you do burn candles, make sure that you...

  • Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily.
  • Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.
  • Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame.
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.
  • Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
  • Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles.

Religious Candles

Lit candles are used in religious services, in places of worship, and in the home. Whether you are using one candle, or more than one on a candelabra, kinara, chanukiah or menorah, make sure you take a few moments to learn about using candles safely.

  • Handheld candles should not be passed from one person to another at any time.
  • When lighting candles at a candle lighting service, have the person with the unlit candle dip their candle into the flame of the lit candle.
  • Lit candles should not be placed in windows where a blind or curtain could catch fire.
  • Candles placed on, or near tables, altars, or shrines, must be watched by an adult.
  • If a candle must burn continuously, be sure it is enclosed in a glass container and placed in a sink, on a metal tray, or in a deep basin filled with water.

Holiday Decorations

Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire. There are string lights, too many extension cords, and electrical hazards amok! Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season.

  • Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.
  • Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.
  • Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
  • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.
  • Keep decorations away from windows and doors.
  • Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed

Fire Damage Restorers

This is a photo of a fire damage situation in Sacramento, CA.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fire Damage Restoration

Map of California Fires as of August 6, 2018

Our team here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden Arcade wanted to take a minute to reflect on the multiple fires that are affecting the State of California. As of this last weekend, the Mendicino Complex Fire doubled in size and became the 2nd biggest fire in California's history. The Carr Fire, which has been burning since late July in Redding, has costed lives and thousands of homes, and still remains only 45% contained.

Our team is currently standing on call waiting for approval to start the cleanup of these smoke and fire damaged homes.

If you have been affected by the fires, here are some tips on what to do before help arrives:

  • Limit movement in home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
  • Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a professional can check the system.

What to NOT do when you have fire and smoke damage:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces.
  • Attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture.
  • Attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to ire, heat, or water.
  • Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored closed to fire, heat, or water.
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures.
  • Send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning will set in the smoke odor.

If you have fire damage, give us a call at 916-285-7257.

Holiday Kitchen Safety Tips

12/6/2017 (Permalink)

This is what your dinner table can look like if you make sure to follow important safety procedures when cooking!

If you're anything like us here at SERVPRO, the holidays can't come soon enough! With all this excitement, from gift giving to string lights and Christmas trees, it's important to remember to stay safe as you cook that holiday meal. With cooking being the number one cause of house fires, the American Red Cross provides a few tips on how to keep your home safe, so you can enjoy this wonderful time of year!

Ways to Stay Safe When You Cook Your Holiday Meal

  1. When frying your holiday latkes, grilling, or broiling any food, don't leave it unattended! Make sure to stay in the kitchen or turn off the stove if you need to leave the room.
  2. Use a timer to remind yourself of when to turn off the stove or oven. Sometimes it's too easy to get caught up in a big play while watching that Christmas Day football game and reminders are helpful!
  3. Make sure to wear your hair up and don't wear loose sleeves or anything that can dangle when you're cooking. An ER visit is not the way to spend the holidays, for sure!
  4. If you're simmering, baking, roasting, or broiling food, make sure to check it regularly. The only thing worse than burnt food is a house fire.
  5. Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease build up (and prevent your mother in law from nagging you about it).
  6. Always, always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the house to make sure all your cooking appliances are turned off.
  7. Keep kids and pets away from the cooking area! Its safer for them and less stressful for you!
  8. Keep anything that can catch on fire (whether it be pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, etc.) far away from any cooking appliances.
  9. Install smoke alarms near your kitchen, on each level of your home, near sleeping areas, and in bedrooms. Make sure to test the smoke alarms each month and replace your batteries in the alarms every 6 months.
  10. Consider installing a fire extinguisher in your house, and contact the local fire department for training on the proper uses of fire extinguishers.

Even if you follow all these tips, disasters are never planned. If you experience a disaster, give our professionals a call at 916-285-7257 and we will be more than happy to help.
